HECETA LIGHTHOUSE BED & BREAKFAST

Near the small town of Florence, Oregon you'll find the Heceta Head Lighthouse that has been operating since 1894.  And THIS is where we headed last week for one night in the Lightkeeper's home (pictured on the right), which is now a bed and breakfast.  On a warm summer's day this is what the coastline looks like, and exactly how I remember it last summer on our family's camping trip nearby.

THIS is how the weather greeted us last week.  An awesome ocean storm that swept the waves high and dangerous along the coastal roads and that rattled every door and window in the Victorian-style home.  This is the view out the windows of the bedroom our friends enjoyed for the night.

They undoubtedly had the best of the bedrooms offered there.  Hubby and I enjoyed a bedroom on the backside of the home that protected us from the rattles and the commotion of the storm outside.  And on another important subject, surprisingly, most of the rooms have their own bathrooms.

This was our room.  Victorian in style and staying with the feel of the early 1900's.  The bed was sooo comfy and I'd have taken the mattress home with us if that were at all possible.  We almost got used to the paint color on the walls.

This is the front bedroom  with the inspiring ocean view that utterly captured what life must have been like for the lighthouse keepers and their family.  The house is reported to be haunted, but none of the eight people staying that night could tell you there is truth to that ghostly tale.

One of the perks of staying in this charming home is the invitation to take a walk on up the hill to the lighthouse.  So, after we got ourselves settled into our rooms and visited with the other guests, we headed out into the stormy weather and walked to the high cliffs at the base of the lighthouse.  It seemed appropriate to just watch the ocean in such great turmoil without speaking a word.  Not that anyone could have even heard a word ... the ocean and sound of the wind was awesome.

The Heceta Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast is known for its 7 course breakfast.  Served with all the style and panache you would expect from that era, the food was delectable and I guarantee you no one would ever go away hungry.  One of the courses was a fresh tropical fruit salad of honeydew, mango, kiwi, pineapple and papaya.  Freshly baked pumpkin bread was the perfect complement.

The yogurt, cranberry and passion fruit combination was awesome.  Now, of course you get the egg dish and sausage course, but this was outstanding to me.  I shall be attempting to copy this little number until I get it exactly right!

The conversation at breakfast was lively and enjoyable.  A couple visiting from Florida and a couple visiting from Indiana rounded out our table perfectly.

After breakfast we needed to walk.  Walking off seven delicious courses before heading back to Portland is highly recommended because you'll be in the car for the next three hours.  But first, you better stop in Florence and hit all the shops and possibly the Woodburn Outlet Mall as you near Portland.

Be sure to take the guided tour of the lighthouse.  The facts and interesting stories you'll hear, not to mention the views from inside the lighthouse are memorable.  This marks the 80-plus steps that take you to the top of the light house, and once you're there ....

your reward is the view of the ocean way ... way ....  up from where you started, and a close-up view of the light itself.  So much history.  A destination that should be high on your list of places to go ... things to do.

Just ask these wonderful people.  They've been all over the world.  Seen more than I'll ever see.  Experienced more of what makes this world go 'round than I ever expect to in my lifetime.  And yet ... these fun-loving Oregonians discovered a couple fascinating days right along our own coastline.   Thanks for inviting us to tag along with you!  We'll hand you two the right room key this time, and personally escort you to the correct charming bedroom ... complete with towels, soap, and chocolates.  Everything a guest would ever need or want is in the right room.

It's an inside joke Wink that I'm likely to share some day.  I promise to leave the names of the guilty and the innocent out!
